This letter y craft is great for toddlers, preschoolers, kindergartners, and grade 1 students as they learn the letter Y. Kids will have fun with this sensory letter craft they will make with their own precious handprint. This letter y handprint craft uses a brown handprint as a base then adds some eyes, snout, and horns to make a cute yak craft. Don’t forget to print the letter y worksheets for preschool to go along with it for practicing writing the letter Y.

This craft uses some paint and simple supplies to make a y is for yak handprint. It’s always a lot of fun to for the kids to see how their hand print can turn into something else. For this activity, we use brown paint for the main part of the head. Next, we make the grey horns, black eyes, and big, pink snout. It’s a fun and simple way to make an adorable yak handprint!

To make this y is for yak handprint all you need are a few simple materials you probably already have on hand at home:


  • Letter “Y” is for Yak printable
  • brown paint
  • black paint
  • pink paint
  • grey paint
  • paint brush
  • wipes to clean hands

First, print the printable to go along with this craft. We like to practice the letter on the first page before making our handprint, and we do the next page while the yak handprint is drying. First, paint the palm with brown paint.

Now it’s time to make the handprint! Make a handprint near the center of the page, making sure the fingers are close together, with fingers pointing downwards towards the bottom of the paper. It’s best to let this dry before moving to the next step.

To finish up your yak craft, use a paintbrush and black paint to make two eyes. Use pink paint to make a sort-of upside-down heart shape for the yak’s snout. Lastly, use grey paint to make two big grey horns on the top of the yak’s head.
