Seashell Activities
Summer is a great time to learn while playing and having fun! We love heading to the beach during the summer and the kids LOVE collecting seashells on our trip the to sandy shores. And although they are all pretty…. the many teasures they just had to bring home tend to loose their meaning once home. Does that happen in your house too? So we decided to try a fun seashell activity where we we try a beach theme project. IN our summer science we explored with an acid base experiment. This quick-and-easy seashell science activity is perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, kindergartners, grade 1, grade 2, and up to learn about what makes up a seashell and more.
Whether you are a parent, teacher, or homeschooler – you will love this hands-on summer activity for kids!
Seashell Science Activities
This summer science experiment really couldn’t be any easier! It is so simple, but a fun way for kids to learn. All you need to try this seashell activities kindergarten are:
- mason jar or container
- vinegar to almost fill your jar
- seashells – various colors and sizes
Summer Science Experiments
Put shells in a jar filled with distilled white vinegar almost to the top.
Almost immediately bubbles will start coming to the surface.
Summer Science
The bubbles are actually carbon dioxide that is created with the chemical reaction between the vinegar (ACID) and the calcium carbonite that the seashells are naturally made of (BASE).
Acid Base Experiment
After 1 days the shells will have significantly dissolved and lost their color.
If you empty out the vinegar and pour in fresh vinegar it will completely dissolve the shell within another 1-2 days. You just need to be patient as the acid does it’s job; it is after all a household material and not a harsh chemical. But it will get the job done.
Summer Activity for Kids
Can your children name some other common acids you can find in your kitchen? How about lemon and lime for edible products. As far as chemicals ammonia and diluted soaps are also acids commonly found in households.
