I love using seasonal activities like this halloween science project to get kids excited about science! We made a twist on our DIY Lava lamp for some halloween fun! This this halloween lava lamp kids will explore the scientific method, cause and effect, chemical reactiona, and be WOWed by this fun halloween science experiment. Try this halloween activity for kids with preschoolers, kindergartners, grade 1, grade 2, grade 3, and grade 4 students.

Empty bottle – clear pastic bottle like a water bottle, soda bottle, etc. oil – any kind will work. I suggest getting oil that is as clear as possible for it not to affect the coloring. Fill 1/3 of your container with water. Now add baby oil until you have just 2-3″ of headspace left.

Drop in about 10-15 drops of food coloring.

The bottle already looks pretty cool, doesn’t it? Point out to your kids how the food coloring dropped right to the bottom to the water layer where it began diffusing. Oil and water based food coloring do not mix! Learn more about density with Rainbow in a Jar Density Experiments.

Drop in alka seltzer tablet. You can drop it in whole, break it in half, make in may pieces. Each will work and just change the erruption pattern. So if you are going to do it more than once, perhaps have your children make hypothesis as to what breaking up the tablet will change.
