Curious about the life cycle of a groundhog? Here are their fascinating stages:

• Groundhogs, also known as woodchucks, are born in early spring. Their mothers typically give birth to a litter of 2 to 6 babies, called kits.
• Groundhogs dig elaborate underground burrows to call home. These burrows can have multiple chambers and entrances, providing shelter for these furry critters throughout their lives.
• In their first year, young groundhogs grow as they learn to explore and forage for food. They spend most of their time above ground during this period
• Once they reach adulthood, groundhogs become experienced burrow architects and develop their signature ability to dig. They also partake in hibernation, during which they retreat to their burrows and sleep throughout the winter months.
• As winter comes to an end, groundhogs awaken from their slumber and embark on a quest to find their special someone. Mating season typically occurs in March.
• After successfully mating, female groundhogs undergo a gestation period of around 31 to 32 days. The young kits are born in April or May, and the cycle repeats itself!

What is a groundhog

A groundhog is a small mammal native to North America. It belongs to the rodent family and is known for its brown fur and stout body. Groundhogs are famous for their ability to predict the arrival of spring based on their behavior on February 2nd, known as Groundhog Day. Legend has it that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow and sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. However, if it doesn’t see its shadow, it means an early spring is on the way. Groundhogs are skilled diggers and create extensive burrow systems underground. They primarily feed on vegetation and hibernate during the winter months. Despite their cute and cuddly appearance, groundhogs can be quite territorial and can cause damage to gardens and yards. Overall, these little critters play a unique role in folklore and serve as a fascinating part of North American wildlife.

Where do groundhogs live
