Platypus life cycle
Did you know that the life cycle of a platypus is one of the most unique and fascinating processes in the animal kingdom? From hatching from an egg to becoming one of the few mammals that lays eggs, the platypus goes through several stages in its development.
It all starts with the female platypus laying one to three small, leathery eggs. The mother then incubates these eggs by curling around them and keeping them warm until they hatch, which typically takes around ten days. Once the eggs hatch, the newborn platypuses, also known as puggles, are blind and hairless, relying solely on their mother for protection and nourishment.
As they grow, the puggles develop a thick layer of waterproof fur and begin to explore their surroundings. They start learning how to swim and hunt for food, all under the watchful eye of their mother. Eventually, the young platypuses become independent and leave their mother to establish their own territories.
