All you need for this word family activity are a few simple supplies:
- White copy paper
- Printer
- Stapler
- Paper cutter or scissors
- Free printable file
How To Make The Word Families Printable Flip Book
Putting together this word families printable flip book is simple and quick! Just follow these easy steps:
- Print the Pages: Print pages 2-6 of the document. Set aside the front and back covers and the page with tap, rat, lip, and rug.
- Cut Along the Dotted Line: On pages 2 and 3 (with mat, cat, pip, mug and cap, hat, rip, rug), cut down the dotted line to separate each section.
- Arrange the Pages: Lay down the tracing pages first, then place the tap/rat/lip/rug page on top. Next, add the two pages you cut along the dotted lines and finish with the cover on top. Stack the pages from back to front to keep them in order.
- Staple the Book: Align the pages carefully along the edges of the left, top, and bottom. Use the staple guides on the left side to staple each book together.
- Separate the Books: Cut along the dotted lines on the cover to separate each mini-book. And that’s it—you’re ready to go!
Your students now have a fun, hands-on tool to practice their word families!
Word Families for Kindergarten
Invite students to make the book their own by adding their names to the front page and coloring the pictures.
Encourage students to turn the pages slowly, pointing out that each word in the book ends with the same sound. Take a moment to discuss this pattern with them—it’s a fun way for kids to see how word families work!
As they read each word, have them tap the dot under each letter as they sound it out. This tactile action reinforces letter sounds and helps them focus on each part of the word.
At the end of the book, there is a tracing page on which they can practice writing each word.

Here are some fun ideas to take learning with word families even further
- Create a New Word Family Book: After students have practiced with the book, invite them to brainstorm other words that belong to each word family. They can create mini-word family books with these new words, draw pictures, or add sentences.
- Simple Sentence Challenge: Challenge students to choose one of the words in the book and use it in a simple sentence. Then, ask them to swap that word with another word from the same family. Does the sentence still make sense? This activity helps them see how word families work in context.
