Oil and Water Experiment

Kids are going to be amazed by this really cool oil and water experiment. Parents, teachers and homeschoolers will love that this oil and water science experiment is easy to set-up and try! All you need is water, oil, and food coloring to try this easy science project with toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners. We love getting kids excited about exploring the world around them and discoving that science is fun! So add this easy kindergarten science experiments to your list this year!

All you need are a few simple materials to try this science experiment for kindergartners:
  • small clear glass, vase, or container (small is better so you don’t waste a lot of oil)
  • any light colored oil you have on hand OR use baby oil for a completely clear project
  • colored water (with a variety of liquid food coloring colors)
  • pipettes (or eye dropper)
  • protective eye wear (makes it extra fun!)
Fill a container with vegetable oil. Next, fill several small container with water and food coloring so you have various colors.

Cool easy science projects

Have kids use their pipette to suck up some colored water. Now insert it carefully in the oil and press to release a ball of colored water.
HINT:  If you go really slow you will get a larger ball.

Isn’t that so pretty! Depending on how slow and long you push the colored water balls will be bigger or smaller.
Use a different pipette with a different colored water to make different colored balls.

Oil and water separate when combined because water is more dense than oil. It causes the colored water droplets to sink when added to the jar of oil.
