However, the process can be simplified for this age group.
Most Kindergarten kids are so excited to express their opinion about everything. They have strong feelings about the things they love and hate and everything in between. However, they do not always have the writing skills to express their point of view. We are lucky that we get to teach them how to channel their passion into persuasive writing. The process of learning opinion writing takes practice. While it is tempting for us as educators to jump right into a persuasive essay. We need to go a little slower to help our students develop their skills. Our process will help your students learn how to express their points of view in a simple format. So let’s dive in. What Is Involved in Opinion Writing At the Kindergarten Level
At the Kindergarten level students are expected to express an opinion or preference about given topics or books. In a nutshell, they want them to
- Think about something and develop a viewpoint (decide what they think)
- Explain why they have that opinion (why they think that)
- Make a list of thoughts and reasons for their opinion( tell others what you think).
It is probably easier for kids in this age group to express their ideas verbally, but putting them on paper is an added layer of challenge. We will go through a four-step process to help them move from verbalizing an opinion to writing it down.
Kindergarten Writing Activity
Opinion writing is the act of explaining what you think about something. It isn’t enough to express a preference. Our students must also explain why they hold that opinion.
Eventually, they also need to learn how to back up their opinions with facts. But that is something they will learn at a later stage. At this level, we are just trying to encourage them to express themselves clearly.
How do you teach opinion writing to kindergarten?
One step at a time!
Step 1 talking about your opinions
Start by asking questions that invite children to express an opinion. For example
- What is the best part of fall?
- What do you like most about Halloween?
- What is your favorite color in the fall?
- In your opinion, what is the best time to go trick or treating?
Likewise, we can encourage Kindergartners to express opinions and preferences about a variety of topics. After all, opinion writing is not just limited to Halloween!
Sometimes it helps reduce anxiety if you start the ball rolling by expressing your own opinions and preferences. This will help your students see that everyone has an opinion. Even teachers!
Fall Writing Activity
When reading a story, pause to ask your kids for their thoughts about the character’s actions. Inquire what they would do if they were in the story.
It can be helpful to read stories in which someone expresses an opinion. Ask questions like
- What does (name of character) think about (topic)?
- What do you think?
- What other ideas do you have?

Teacher Tip: Explain to your students that in this class, they will hear many different ideas. Sometimes they may not all agree. But we can be respectful of other people’s thoughts. Everyone’s opinion matters!
Step 2 Writing Down Our Opinions
Hopefully, kids will grow accustomed to expressing their thoughts verbally. Once they are used to that, you can begin working on helping write their opinions.

Kindergarten writing lessons
- The first page is a simple activity. It asks students to choose one of two alternatives. Remind them that there are no right or wrong answers. They just need to pick one of two options.
Teacher’s Tip: extend this activity by tallying all the answers and creating some simple graphs.
- The second page encourages students to generate ideas. They must select three things they enjoy doing in the fall. Then describe and draw these activities. You may also do a brainstorming session with the entire class if you like. Make a list of your student’s favorite fall activities. Display them where everyone can see them so that they may be used as inspiration for their worksheets.
- The third page allows kids to choose their top choice from the previous sheet. Then they need to come up with a reason for that choice. It can be helpful to do the exercise yourself and talk through the thinking process. “In my opinion, jumping in a pile of leaves is the best thing about fall because it is fun to dive into the pile.” You may invite the class to come up with some different reasons. This allows students to exchange thoughts. It is also helpful for those who find it hard to come up with their own reasons.
- Finally, when they have gone through that process, they may complete the fourth page. They will complete the sentence,” the best thing about fall is” The provide a reason for their answer. The completed pages can be used for a bulletin board display or collated into a class book.

The process of teaching opinion writing to Kindergarteners is a lot easier than you might think. All it takes is some patience and tenacity on your part. As well as willingness from the students themselves.
