Shape Tracing Worksheets
Simply pick a shape card and decide if you want to trace it with the marker or use play dough OR both. You can buy playdough or use one of our favorite recipes like our Ice Cream Edible Playdough, Amazing Kool Aid Playdough Recipe, or our simple 2 ingredient playdough. You can even use other small manipulatives to “trace” the shape eg. mini erasers, stickers, or buttons.
Some children would prefer using play dough over writing with a utensil, which is still developing those fine motor skills believe it or not! When manipulating play dough, the fine muscles in the fingers and hands get a workout too!
Roll the play dough into a long snake, then “trace” the shape with the dough. This might be tricky at first, but, practice makes perfect! Encourage the child to also trace the name of the shape with a marker and “reading” the name while doing so. Each one of the free shape mats has a small smiling shape at the top, the shape name to trace, and a large shape to trace at the bottom. The playdough shape mat is mostly black and white to save on printing with a simple blue border around the shape card.
Shape tracing mats are versatile and can easily be used by a number of children with different abilities to learn about shapes in a fun way! Pop these shape tracing mats into a bag with markers/play dough and you have a busy bag ready to go!
