Winter Activities for Kindergartners

My daughter came home from Kindergarten last week and asked for a ruler. I thought she was going to use it to draw straight lines on her paper, as she has done before. To my surprise she started walking around the room measuring. “The door knob is 3 inches. This book is 6 inches. My foot is 8 inches”. I sat there stunned. First of all, when did she grow up so fast. Second, I guess I didn’t realize she was going to learn about measurements this early in her school career. I was so excited. I went straight to the computer and created these super cute measurement worksheets to help practice even more. I wanted to make sure all parents, teachers, and homeschoolers could help their preschoolers, kindergartners, and grade 1 students practice using a ruler too… so I made these free measurement worksheets.

At her level she is only using ‘big numbers’ as she calls them. So even if something measured at 3 3/4 , she would just say it was 4. The benefit of this free printable measurement activity, though, is that if your child can use the smaller increments of measurement this activity will work!
On the second page of the measurement kindergarten worksheets you will notice instructions but also a printable ruler. We happen to have a ruler at home but I know not everyone does. I think the only reason we have one is because of my crafting, it’s not a typical children’s craft supply. The printable ruler is broken down with legitimate 1 inch increments.
HINT: If you are doing this activity for your classroom, or would like to be able to reuse the activity, laminating the papers or using dry erase pouches is a great idea. Then the answers can be written in dry erase markers instead of crayon or colored pencil.

The first two pages have 4 lines each. Each line holds a different quantity of winter themed images that range in different lengths. Have the child hold the ruler up to the objects in one line and find the closest number. Write that number on the line next to the box.
  • Continue on through the next 7 boxes.
  • On page 5 there are three trees, each at different heights. The activity here is to measure how tall each tree is as well as measure how wide each tree trunk is.
  • Page 5 would also be a great page to have the child add decoration to. The child could fill in the sky and even decorate the trees with ornaments or with animals.
  • Then, page 6 holds boxes with a measurement and space. In the space, have the child place the ruler and use it as a guide to draw a line the same length as what is listed in the box.
My daughter LOVED this. She was so happy to be able to use a tool like the ruler. I can see her being my helper for all of my DIY projects I like to do!
