How to grow borax crystals

Growing borax crystals is really easy and super fast making it a great kindergarten science experiment! Let me show you how to grow crystals overnight. You will be making a super saturated solution, meaning it will hold as much of the powder as possible and still have it dissolve when it is heated. The heat makes the molecules seperate and allow it to dissolve more of the borax.  As the solution cools the borax particles will seperate from the water and form crystals on the pipe cleaner shamrock.

Use another pipe cleaner to make the final leaf and stem, then fold the stem back up so it is thicker and to make it easier to hang your clover in the solution. Don’t forget to twist the chenille stick to secure.

Carefully lower the shamrock project into the super saturated solution. Attach the string to the craft stick. Make sure the projet is not touching the bottom or sides of the jar, but is completely submerged. Place the jar out of the way so it can sit undisturbed overnight to grow the crystals.

Shamrock Activity

You will start seeing crystals forming within an hour. But resist the urge to remove it until at least 8 hours have passed so you will have lots of shamrock crystals!  When it is done, carefully pull the project up and set on a paper towel or plate to dry.
