So how do you classify the various states of matter? There are three states of matter: Liquid, Gas and Solid.
- Water is the perfect example of matter that can change density. We know that water that is frozen is ice, water in its natural state is water and hot it becomes steam. Liquids have the characteristics as follows: It does not hold a definite shape, there is not a definite volume and the particles that make up liquid move freely amongst each other but are still attracted to one another.
- Gas on the other hand has the following characteristics: Gas also does not have a definite shape or volume, the particles that make up gas can move in random paths and do not attract to one another. Gas is also highly compressible.
- The last state of matter is solid. The characteristics of this include: A solid has a definite shape and volume. The particles that make up a solid vibrate around fixed axes.Â
