Materials Needed

• Copy Paper
• Cardstock
• small manipulatives like Valentine’s candy, mini heart erasers, or pom poms
• Love Monster Subtraction Mats (see download button below)
• Laminator or sheet protectors (optional)
• Dice

Subtraction worksheets

Print the Love Monster subtraction mats on cardstock. Then laminate for durability (optional). You could also place the mats in sheet protectors. Now print the worksheets. Finally place your manipulatives in a small container with the dice.

We have included two different activities for your students to enjoy.

Subtraction Worksheets For Kindergarten 1-4

All of these worksheets have subtraction problems. Students will need a Love Monster mat, some manipulatives, and one of the worksheets. Demonstrate how to use the mats to do the subtraction problems.

So, if the subtraction problem is 8-4, we give the love monster 8 candies. Ham it up by making monster sounds and saying, “Yummy Candies.” Place 8 candies on the mat. Say something like, “Oh, look! The love monster ate 4 candies.” Make the noise of the monster eating. Remove 4 candies. Ask how many candies are left? 1,2,3,4 candies are left on the mat.

Then, say the following out loud.

8 candies less 4 candies leaves 4 candies. So, 8 take away 4 equals 4

Then, write the answer on the worksheet. Repeat this process, slowly letting the student do more and more of the work.

Subtraction Worksheets For Kindergarten 5

This worksheet doesn’t have subtraction problems ready to go. Students must roll two dice to get the numbers to work with. For this to work, students need to understand the concept of the larger number. Students will need a Love Monster mat, some manipulatives, two dice, and worksheet 5.

The student begins by rolling the two dice. Instruct them to write the larger number at the start of the first equation and the lower number in the 2nd blank spot. Then, do the subtraction as before.

The great thing about this worksheet is that you can get 12-sided or even 20-sided dice to use as students progress to subtracting higher numbers.
