EASY Piet Mondrian Abstract Art Project for Kids

I love teaching my kids about famous artists and their unique styles. Not only does it help children start learning some art history, but it allows them to see the wide variety of styles that are out there and that they are all amazing. Exploring famous art projects helps give children the confidence that their project doesn’t have to look like their classmates or the sample to be good. Today we decided to explore mondrian art for kids. Piet Mondrian has a unique style where he used bold primary colors and lines tomake very mathematically inviting abstract art for kids. Personally, I love his style and knew it would make a simple art projects for kids from preschoolers, kindergartners, toddlers, grade 1, grade 2, grade 3, and grade 4 to try.

All you need to try this fun and unique art projects are a few simple materials you probably already have on hand:

• construction paper – white, red, blue, and yellow
• pencil
• ruler
• scissors
• glue stick
• blac puffy paint or black glue

Piet Mondrian for Kids

Dutch painter Piet Mondrian was born March 7, 1872 under the name Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan. Mondrian is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century and a pioneer of abstract art. Over the course of his life, his artwork was reduced to simple geometric elements. To express universal beauty Mondrian decided to limit his art to three primary colors (red, blue and yellow), the three primary values (black, white and gray) and the two primary directions (horizontal and vertical). Mondrian died February 1, 1944.

Art projects for kindergarten

Start by giving children a piece of white paper, a ruler, and a pencil. Depending on the age of your children you may want to have a pile of different sized yellow, blue, and red squares and rectangles for them to use in their planning.

Draw line on the paper making lots of different sized rectangles and squares. It really doesn’t matter how they do this – that is the beautify of the project!

Abstract art for kids

Now glue red, yellow, and blue squares and rectangles in some of the spaces. You do NOT want to fill every space. The white space is important to the composition.

Famous art projects

Finish glueing the rectangles and squares to cover spaces on your project. Colors can be alternated, next to similar colors, etc. Just make sure they leave blank spaces too.

Art projects for kids

Carefully use black glue or black puffy paint to darken the lines on the page and between shapes. Take your time.

Continue until all lines have been darkened and their is a line between and around all shapes.

HINT: Remind students they should go top to bottom so they don’t smear the pretty, neat black lines they’ve made.

While you can certainly use a black marker or sharpie, we love the slightly raised black lines that really gave the project extra character and made the style of the composition really stand-out. This was such a fun and simple art project for kids!
