Writing sentences doesn’t have to be boring, especially with a fun fall theme to help get kids excited. In this activity, students will create simple sentences using a word bank and a cute craft of an owl peeking out of a pumpkin. They’ll choose words to form their sentence, then write it on a recording sheet. This activity combines creativity with sentence structure practice, making it engaging for kids who are just starting to form complete thoughts on paper.
This activity has been a hit in my classroom—kids love the owl and pumpkin theme, and they don’t even realize they’re learning sentence structure while they’re busy crafting.

Sentence writing kindergarten
Teaching sentence structure to young learners is one of those things that can seem challenging, but with the right tools, it becomes much easier. By breaking sentences down into basic parts—who, what, and where—it helps children understand how sentences are built. In this activity, we focus on these three parts to make the sentence structure super clear.
I’ve noticed that when kids understand that a sentence simply tells who is doing something (subject), what they’re doing (verb), and where it’s happening (setting), they feel a lot more confident about writing. Plus, using a word bank makes it easier because it gives them ideas without feeling overwhelmed by having to come up with everything on their own.
How to Use This Activity: Step by Step
Here’s how you can use this fall-themed peeping owl sentence writing activity:
- Download the Owl and Pumpkin Template You can download the free owl template here below. Print out the template and word banks. The template will have an owl peeking out of a pumpkin, ready for the kids to color and cut out after they finish their sentences.
- Introduce the Word Bank Start by showing the students the word bank. It will include three categories of words: who (the subject), what (the verb), and where (the setting). The “who” could be the owl, a bat, or another fall-themed character. The “what” might be verbs like “flies” or “sits,” and the “where” might be places like “in the tree” or “on the pumpkin.”
I like to go over each word with the kids first, helping them understand how the words fit into a sentence. You can model a few examples to get them started, like “The owl flies in the tree.” - Have the Kids Pick Their Words Now it’s time for the fun part! Let the kids choose one word from each column—one who, one what, and one where. They’ll mix and match to create their sentence. This part always gets lots of giggles because they can come up with funny combinations, like “The bat sits on the pumpkin.”
- Write the Sentence Once they have their sentence, give them a recording sheet where they’ll write it down. This step is important for reinforcing the structure of the sentence and practicing handwriting. If some kids are struggling, you can write it for them while they copy it onto their sheet.
- Color and Cut Out the Craft After they’ve written their sentence, they can color and cut out the owl and pumpkin. Once the craft is done, you can attach their sentences to the back or bottom of the craft and display them around the classroom for a fun fall-themed bulletin board.
Extension Activities
If you want to extend this activity, here are a few fun ideas:
- Create a Story Instead of just one sentence, challenge the kids to create a short story using multiple sentences. They can choose a few different characters, actions, and settings from the word bank and string them together into a little fall story. I’ve found that this really helps them think about how sentences connect to tell a complete story.
- Sentence Sorting Print out additional sentences from the word bank, cut them into strips, and have the kids sort them into “who,” “what,” and “where” categories. It’s a great way to reinforce the parts of a sentence and helps them practice without writing.
- Partner Sentences Pair the students up and have them pick words together. One student can choose the “who,” while the other picks the “what” and “where.” This way, they work together to create silly and creative sentences. Afterward, they can write down their sentences and read them aloud to the class.
Why This Activity Works
The reason this activity works so well is that it makes writing simple and fun. When kids get to choose their words from a word bank, it takes the pressure off of thinking of something from scratch, and the peeping owl craft gives them a creative outlet to make the learning process enjoyable.
In my experience, making writing interactive and hands-on keeps kids engaged. They’re not just writing—they’re creating, cutting, and coloring, which helps hold their attention longer. And when they’re having fun, they don’t even realize they’re practicing important writing skills like sentence structure and handwriting!
