Life Cycle of a Turkey
Turkeys go through a fascinating life cycle from the time they are hatched until they reach maturity. It all starts with the eggs being incubated for about 28 days before they hatch into cute, fluffy chicks. These little ones are called poults and are cared for by their mother hen for the first few weeks of their lives.
As they grow, turkeys go through various stages of development. They start off as tiny poults that need to be kept warm and fed regularly. As they get older, they start to explore their surroundings more and develop their distinctive feathers.
Once they reach adulthood, turkeys continue to grow and mature. Male turkeys, called toms, develop bright and colorful plumage while female turkeys, called hens, are more subdued in their coloring. Turkeys are social animals and often form flocks with other turkeys, especially during the breeding season.

Turkeys for Kids
Did you know that turkeys have a remarkable ability to fly? While they may not be the most agile birds in the sky, turkeys are capable of flying up to 55 miles per hour for short distances. Another fascinating fact about turkeys is that they have a keen sense of hearing, which helps them detect predators from afar. Additionally, turkeys have excellent eyesight and can see in color, which is not common among birds.
Turkeys are also known for their distinctive gobble, which is actually how male turkeys communicate with potential mates during breeding season. Speaking of breeding, female turkeys are fantastic mothers and will fiercely protect their young chicks from any perceived threats.
Despite their reputation as the centerpiece of Thanksgiving feasts, turkeys are actually very intelligent birds. They can recognize familiar faces, solve problems, and even exhibit playful behavior. So, next time you see a turkey strutting around, remember that there’s more to these birds than meets the eye!
